Spanish Adverbs

Adverbs are words that describe or modify, verbs, adjectives or other adverbs.

He ran quickly.
Quickly is an adverb. It describes how he ran.

She spoke more slowly than he.
Slowly is an adverb. It describes how she spoke.
More is also an adverb. It modifies the adverb slowly.

Many Spanish adverbs end in –mente, which is equivalent to the English ending –ly.

perfectamente – perfectly              claramente – clearly
velozmente – swiftly                     profundamente – deeply, profoundly

Practice: Write these sentences in Spanish.

  1. The singer sang perfectly.

  1. The tiger ran swiftly.

  1. Yesterday I saw the mountain clearly.

4.  The Lord loves us deeply.

Another way to form an adverb is to use the preposition con + the noun. Note the relationship between the adjective, the noun, and the 2 adverb forms.

Adjective: cuidadoso (careful)                 Noun: cuidado - care
Adverbs: cuidadosamente or con cuidado – carefully

Adjective: perfecto (perfect)                    Noun: perfección
Adverbs: perfectamente or con perfección – perfectly

Adjective: cariñoso (affectionate)             Noun: cariño - affection
Adverbs: cariñosamente or con cariño – affectionately

Adjective: atento                                     Noun: atenciόn
Adverbs: atentamente or con atenciόn

Practice: Write these sentences in Spanish. Pay attention to the verb tense!

  1. We work carefully.

  1. I did the assignment perfectly.

  1. The mother kissed her son (hijo) affectionately.

  1. The students take notes attentively.

Give the English meaning for these Spanish adverbs.  Note that when an adjective has a written accent, the adverb retains it as in the adjectives fácil and difícil.

fácilmente –                                                       difícilmente –

cortésmente –                                                     constantemente –

lentamente –                                                       débilmente –

directamente –                                                    rápidamente –

dulcemente –                                                       felizmente –

tranquilamente –                                                  sinceramente –

alegremente –                                                      tristemente –

totalmente –                                                        sumamente –

Spanish adverbs that do not follow this pattern include:

apenas – barely
demasiado – too much/ too many
